What to Expect During Your First Dental Visit

We Know the First Visit Can Be Daunting

Whether you are switching dentists, visiting for the first time in years, or have dental anxiety, we understand that the first appointment can feel intimidating. This guide walks you through exactly what to expect — no surprises.

Before You Arrive

When you book your appointment, our team will ask a few questions about your dental history and any specific concerns. This helps Dr. Mabaso prepare for your visit. You will also be asked to:

  • Arrive 15 minutes early to complete a short medical history form
  • Bring your medical aid card and South African ID
  • Bring any recent dental records or X-rays from your previous dentist (if available)
  • List any medications you are currently taking, including supplements

If you experience dental anxiety, please let us know when booking. We will schedule extra time and ensure the team is prepared to make your visit as comfortable as possible.

The Consultation

Your first appointment typically takes 45–60 minutes. Here is what happens:

1. Getting to Know You

Dr. Mabaso will start by asking about your dental history, any current concerns, and your goals. This is not a rushed conversation — she genuinely wants to understand what matters to you. If aesthetics are important, say so. If you just want to be pain-free, that is equally valid.

2. Comprehensive Examination

The examination includes:

  • Visual inspection of all teeth, gums, and soft tissues
  • Digital X-rays (if needed) — these use significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays
  • Gum health assessment — checking for signs of gum disease
  • Bite and jaw evaluation — looking for alignment issues or signs of grinding
  • Oral cancer screening — a quick, painless check of all soft tissues

3. Discussion and Treatment Plan

After the examination, Dr. Mabaso will explain her findings in plain language — no jargon, no scare tactics. If treatment is needed, you will receive a clear, written plan that includes:

  • What needs to be done and why
  • The order of priority (what is urgent vs. what can wait)
  • Estimated costs and medical aid coverage
  • Timeline and number of appointments required

There is never any pressure to proceed immediately. You are welcome to take the plan home, think about it, and ask questions later.

What If I Need a Cleaning?

If your teeth and gums are in good shape, we may do a professional cleaning during your first visit. If there is significant tartar build-up or gum inflammation, we may schedule a dedicated hygiene appointment with Priya, our dental hygienist, for a more thorough clean.

After Your Visit

You will leave with:

  • A clear understanding of your oral health status
  • A treatment plan (if needed) with costs
  • Your next appointment booked
  • Any immediate concerns addressed

We will also send you a summary via email so you have everything in writing.

A Note on Dental Anxiety

Roughly 1 in 4 South Africans experience some level of dental anxiety. If that includes you, please know that our entire practice was designed with anxious patients in mind — from the calming environment to the way we communicate during treatment. You are always in control, and we will never proceed without your consent.
