Why You Shouldn't Skip Your Six-Month Checkup

More Than Just a Clean

Many patients think of a dental checkup as “just a cleaning” — something they can skip if their teeth feel fine. But a routine visit is actually one of the most effective ways to prevent costly and painful dental problems down the line.

At our practice, a standard checkup involves far more than polishing your teeth. It is a comprehensive assessment of your entire oral health.

What Happens During a Checkup

Visual Examination

Dr. Mabaso examines every tooth, your gums, tongue, and the soft tissues of your mouth. She is looking for early signs of decay, gum disease, oral cancer, and other conditions that often have no symptoms in their early stages.

Digital X-Rays

When needed, low-dose digital X-rays reveal what is happening below the surface — cavities between teeth, bone loss, impacted teeth, and infections that are invisible to the naked eye.

Professional Cleaning

Our hygienist removes plaque and tartar buildup that regular brushing and flossing cannot reach. This is especially important along the gumline and between teeth, where gum disease typically starts.

Personalised Advice

Every mouth is different. Based on what we find, we will give you specific recommendations for your home care routine, whether that means switching to an electric toothbrush, adding a fluoride rinse, or paying more attention to a particular area.

The Cost of Skipping

A checkup and clean costs a fraction of what a root canal, crown, or extraction would. Consider these common scenarios:

  • Small cavity caught early — a simple filling in one visit
  • Same cavity left for a year — deep decay requiring a crown or root canal
  • Early gum disease detected — reversible with better home care and a deep clean
  • Advanced gum disease — ongoing treatment, potential tooth loss

Prevention is always cheaper, faster, and less painful than treatment.

How Often Should You Go?

For most adults, every six months is ideal. Some patients with gum disease, a history of frequent cavities, or certain medical conditions may benefit from visits every three to four months. We will recommend a schedule based on your individual needs.

Medical Aid Coverage

Most medical aids in South Africa cover two checkups per year at no additional cost to you. That means you are essentially leaving a free benefit on the table if you skip your visits. Check our patient info page for details on accepted medical aids.
