Root Canal Treatment
Gentle, pain-free root canal therapy that saves your natural tooth and relieves discomfort.
Root Canals Are Not What You Think
The root canal has an undeserved reputation. With modern techniques and anaesthesia, the procedure is no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. In fact, most patients tell us the relief from their toothache far outweighs any discomfort during treatment.
When Is a Root Canal Needed?
A root canal becomes necessary when the soft tissue (pulp) inside your tooth becomes infected or inflamed. This can happen due to:
- Deep decay that reaches the nerve
- A cracked or chipped tooth
- Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth
- Trauma to the tooth, even without visible damage
Common symptoms include persistent toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers, darkening of the tooth, swelling or tenderness in nearby gums, and a recurring pimple on the gums.
The Procedure
Step 1: Diagnosis
Dr. Mabaso will take digital X-rays to assess the extent of infection and plan the treatment.
Step 2: Anaesthesia
We ensure you are completely numb and comfortable before beginning. For anxious patients, we can discuss sedation options.
Step 3: Treatment
The infected pulp is carefully removed, the canals are cleaned, disinfected, and shaped, then sealed with a biocompatible material. The entire process typically takes 60–90 minutes.
Step 4: Restoration
After healing, a crown is placed over the treated tooth to restore its strength and appearance. The tooth functions normally and can last a lifetime with proper care.
Saving Your Natural Tooth
Whenever possible, saving your natural tooth is preferable to extraction. Your natural teeth are better for chewing, maintain your jawbone structure, and keep adjacent teeth from shifting. A root canal followed by a crown is often the best long-term investment in your oral health.
